Why is a trial HDD needed?
The trial HDD will provide information about the specific ground conditions in this area and will help to understand if HDD methodology is suitable in this location and for a crossing of this length.
We are looking carefully at this because using HDD for laying the main pipeline could have several benefits compared to a tunnelling technique. For example, it would have:
- A much shorter construction period. We estimate that the main pipeline installation could take just over a year with HDD, compared to a much longer period if we build a tunnel.
- A shorter drilling period, several weeks compared to a much longer period for tunnel.
- Less 24-hour working and overall reduced amount of construction traffic.
