What will the trial HDD works involve?
On each side of the Humber, we would need to set up a temporary compound. Each compound would be around 180 metres by 125 metres. You can find the location of the compounds in the South Humber here and the North Humber here.
The compounds will be located away from residential properties, and we are working hard to minimise impact to sensitive habitats. We are liaising with landowners to agree routes for temporary access across the fields.
Each compound will consist of a temporary hardstanding area made of crushed stone to provide a firm surface for:
- The HDD rig and entry pit.
- Temporary welfare cabins and parking for workers.
- The temporary storage of any machinery and supplies needed to carry out the work.
The photo shows what the typical HDD machinery would look like.

The compounds would also have:
- A retention pond for water storage. This is because drilling requires a continuous supply of water. The pond will have two sections; one will store water which will be topped up daily (see below for further details on water supply). The other will store water which has been used (this will then be taken away for disposal).
- Areas for storage of topsoil that will be stripped to create the access road and compound hardstanding area.
- Lighting around the working areas.
- Security fencing.
